As a pet owner living in a warm and humid climate, such as Florida, you’re probably all too familiar with the hassle of dealing with fleas. These pesky little insects can quickly infest your home and make life miserable for your furry companions. While many pet owners turn to topical flea treatments as a solution, these products may not be as effective as you’d hoped, but you’re wondering if brewers yeast for fleas will be your saving grace?
If you’re looking for a natural alternative to traditional flea treatments, you may want to consider brewers yeast. But what exactly is brewers yeast, and how can it help keep fleas at bay? In this post, we’ll explore the ins and outs of brewers yeast, including its benefits as a natural flea treatment for pets.
By the end of this article, you’ll have a better understanding of how brewers yeast works, as well as how to incorporate it into your pet’s routine. So if you’re ready to take a more natural approach to flea control, read on to learn more about this popular supplement.
What Is Brewers Yeast?
When trying to find an excellent natural flea treatment alternative, I had a question: “what is brewers yeast?” Brewers Yeast is composed of a single-celled fungus known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This fungus is used to make beer, wine, and nutritional supplements.
Side Note: active dry yeast (yeast used to make bread) is different than brewers yeast.
Does Brewers Yeast Helps With More Than Fleas?
Did you know that brewers dried yeast is a natural source of essential nutrients for your pets? It’s a protein-rich ingredient containing various amino acids and B vitamins, vital for maintaining your furry friend’s overall health. The best part? It’s all-natural, so you can feel good about giving it to your pets. By incorporating brewer’s dried yeast into your pet’s diet, you can help support their muscle, bone, blood, organ, and immune system health, as well as their coat and nail health, brain function, muscle strength, red blood cell production, and digestion. It’s a great way to ensure your pets get the nutrients they need to thrive!
Brewers Yeast Vs. Traditional Flea Medicine
In addition to its nutritional benefits, brewers yeast has been shown to help prevent flea infestations in pets. The high levels of thiamine (a B vitamin) found in brewers yeast may play a role in repelling fleas. When ingested by your pet, thiamine is released through the skin, creating an unpleasant odor for fleas. As a result, fleas are less likely to take up residence on your pet’s skin and fur, reducing the risk of infestation.
While the exact mechanisms by which brewers yeast prevents flea infestations are not yet fully understood, many pet owners have reported success in using brewers yeast as a natural flea repellent.
On the other hand, traditional flea medicine contains non-natural ingredients that can have adverse reactions in some animals (very rare). Plus, the cost of conventional topical flea medicine is sky-high, and with the manufacturers changing formulas, they do not seem to prevent flea infestations as they used to.
In my experience with trying a few topical flea medicines, they seem to prevent fleas for 10-14 days before they start scratching again and are ready for another dose.
Brewers Yeast vs. Capstar
I’ve had a few people recommend using Capstar to get a flea infestation under control. While Capstar tablets do work at killing adult fleas, they do not prevent fleas long term. Capstar kills adult fleas but does nothing to the egg larvae.
On the other hand, brewer yeast will help prevent fleas just like the traditional flea treatments like Advantix, Frontline, etc. Not to mention that brewer yeast is a lot cheaper to purchase for your pets vs purchasing Capstar.
Does Brewers Yeast Help With Ticks?
When I recommend brewers yeast to my friends, they typically ask me, “Does brewer yeast help with ticks?” and I am happy to say yes, it does. Sources also say that it can help protect your animal from other pesky insects. Again, I’ve only ever used it for flea prevention, as I do not have to worry about ticks with my animals.
How Much Brewers Yeast To Give?
While this question may sound redundant, it is not. The only yeast safe for dogs is brewers yeast. You can purchase brewer yeast tablets from Chewy for $20 a bottle. The bottles will last a while since you must administer 2 tablets for every 10 pounds. I recommend giving it to them with their food, especially if your animal is picky. If not, you can give it to them as a treat.
First-Hand Experience Using Brewers Yeast for Flea Medicine
I’ve used brewers yeast for a natural flea medicine on and off for a few years. I’ve used it on cats and dogs. When I first started using it, I was in the middle of a flea infestation. All animals were infested with fleas, and none of the conventional flea treatments worked for me.
I researched and found that brewers yeast was an all-natural flea treatment, so I decided to give it a shot. It took a few weeks to see the results, but when I tell you, I went from a flea-infested house to finally walking around without getting bit. It was night and day in only a few weeks’ time.
Even after I got rid of the fleas, I still gave them the brewer’s yeast with their food in the morning. They all thought it was a treat, so I didn’t have to break it up to feed it to them. It continued and still works to this day.
I always recommend giving brewers yeast to your animals if you are concerned with the chemicals in Frontline, Advantage, and the like.
