Clingmans Dome: Everything You Need To Know Before You Go

I’m a Florida girl, so when on vacation to a different state, I always try to view their scenery whenever possible. When planning a trip to Southern Tennessee, I wanted to plan some outdoor activities in the Smoky Mountains National Park. This is where I found the popular tourist destination, Clingmans Dome.

In this post, I will discuss everything you need to know about Clingmans Dome before you to ensure you have a great time.

History of Clingmans Dome

In 1959, the Clingmans Dome Tower was built. This observation tower is 45 feet high with a 375-foot-long ramp for visitors to climb to reach the tallest point.

Due to its role in architectural history, the tower is here at Clingmans Dome on the National Register of Historic Places. This tower played an essential role in the National Park Service Modern architecture time because it differed from the traditional rustic style for which the National Park Service is known for.

How Long Does It Take To Hike Clingmans Dome?

The hike up Clingmans Dome typically takes individuals about an hour round trip. The climb gradient of the hike is almost 13%, which puts this trail at a moderate to difficult level.

This is alarming if you are a Florida girl like me since we do not have these trails and inclines. However, there are benches that you can sit on during your trek up to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower.

In my experience, you’ll meet many people as you are hiking up the trail. Some are stopping at every bench with you, and others are coming down and cheering you on to get up there because the views are worth the trek up.

Is Clingmans Dome Open All Year?

Since I am from Florida, I wondered if Clingmans Dome is open all year or only during certain times. Clingmans Dome is only available to guests from April to the end of November. However, this can change as it is open if the weather permits.

If the weather gets bad, the trail will close. I always recommend checking before you go to ensure the trail is open.

What Is the Best Time of Day to Hike Clingmans Dome?

Many people say the best time to go is either sunrise or sunset because the views are gorgeous. However, there is a right time of the day for you to go. Just note if you go during the day, it can get busy with tourists. You’ll be with many people as you ascend and descend the trail.

What States Can You See From the Top of Clingmans Dome?

When you reach the top of Clingmans Dome trail, you’ll be at the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains. The view from the observation tower is breathtaking. You should see the nearby mountains.

However, if the weather is not too foggy, you should be able to see at least 7 states from the tower. You should be able to see Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

When I went during the afternoon, it was too foggy to see much, but I could see views of the nearby mountains.

How Far Is Clingmans Dome from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge?

If you plan to drive from Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, expect to be in the car for about an hour before you reach Clingmans Dome.

However, before you even get to the trail, you’ll be driving through a 7-mile stretch of road with points where you can park and get out of the car to see the view. This is highly recommended. You can get some great pictures.

Is Clingmans Dome Worth It?

I often get asked this question when I tell people I went to Clingmans Dome. The answer is, of course! I found it well worth it. It’s a free excursion within the Smoky Mountain National Park. The hike can be a bit brutal if you are not used to walking on such a steep incline, but the views from the observation tower are priceless. You can stay up in the tower for as long as you like.

I highly recommend taking your time in the observation tower and just taking in the scenery. Even if it is a foggy day, you should still be able to see the mountains in the distance, which fascinates me since I do not have where I am from.

You may even find people who’ve been there on clear days and will show you their photos of what you missed.

There are benches on the top of the observation tower that you can sit on and relax on before you start your journey back down.
