Dollywood would receive its name in 1986, but history shows that the park, or at least its legacy, has been around since 1961.

Back in the ’60s, the park was known as the Rebel Railroad. Throughout the next two and a half decades, the park would undergo another 2 name changes until it finally landed in Dollywood. 

Dollywood is owned and operated by the Herschend Family Enterprises and Dolly Parton herself. Today, according to Ranker, Dollywood ranks in the Top 10 best theme parks in America.

What’s Coming to Dollywood in 2023?

Opening in the spring of 2023, “Big Bear Mountain” is a brand new roller coaster that will take visitors on an exciting journey through the wilderness in search of the Big Bear. According to the Dollywood website, the coaster will feature a 200-foot drop and reach up to 70 mph speeds, making it one of the park’s most thrilling rides yet.

In addition to the new roller coaster, Dollywood plans to expand its resort offerings by adding a new hotel. The hotel is set to include over 300 rooms, a full-service restaurant, and a pool with a splash pad and slide.

Dollywood is conveniently located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, making it easily accessible by car. If you’re using a GPS device, the address is 2700 Dollywood Parks Blvd, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863. Ample parking is available on-site, with different parking options based on proximity to the park entrance.

Using the Pigeon Forge Mass Transit Trolley

Getting to Dollywood using the Pigeon Forge Trolley is convenient for many visitors. The trolley system in Pigeon Forge provides accessible transportation to various attractions, including Dollywood. 

Trolley Routes

Dollywood Trolley Route: The Dollywood Transit service operates a continuous route between Patriot Park and Dollywood, ensuring seamless transportation for visitors. The transit system runs from Patriot Park to Dollywood throughout the day.

The service begins thirty minutes before Dollywood’s opening time and continues in the evening until all visitors have returned to Patriot Park. Arrivals at each location occur at frequent intervals, with transit vehicles arriving approximately every 15 minutes, ensuring a consistent and timely service for travelers throughout the day.

Trolley Stops: The trolley stops at designated locations throughout Pigeon Forge. You can check the official Pigeon Forge Trolley map or website for specific stops along the Dollywood route.

Purchasing Trolley Tickets

Fares: You must pay a fare every time you board the trolley. You can pay the fare when you board the trolley; however, please remember that the driver cannot make changes. You will need an exact change when paying your fare. The fare prices are as follows:

• North Parkway, South Parkway, Gatlinburg Welcome Center, and Wears Valley:$1.00
• Dollywood & Dolly’s Splash Country:$2.50
• All Day Pass (Colored wristband):$3.00
• (Children age 3 and under):  Free

Day Passes: If you plan multiple rides, a day pass will be a better value than individual fares. You can purchase the day pass on the mobile app or at the Pigeon Forge Mass Transit office at 236 Old Mill Ave, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863.

Operating Hours: The trolley runs during the following hours:

Best Time to Visit Dollywood

This is very subjective. What is the best time to visit Dollywood? It may not be the best time for you.

However, if you are a Halloween lover, you should visit around September and October. If you love Christmas, your perfect time will be November and December.

Many people recommend going around April or September if you are looking for great weather with minimal crowds. Of course, if you come from the world’s theme park capital, Orlando, like me, you’ll notice that their “busy” days are nothing compared to a typical day at Walt Disney World, Seaworld, or Universal.

Dollywood Ticket Prices

Well, this is going to depend on you solely. Suppose you plan on coming to Dollywood for a few days or a day. You should also keep in mind that if you are moving or living close to the park right now, they also offer seasonal passes. 

As of December 2023, Dollywood currently has the following offerings for their tickets:

Single Day Ticket: $92

2-Day Tickets: $119

3-Day Tickets: $129

Season Passes

Investing in a season pass package is highly recommended for frequent visitors to the park. A standard season pass quickly reimburses its cost after just two visits, while the gold pass pays for itself after three visits. The gold pass offers added perks, including complimentary parking (typically valued at $15 for regular vehicles) and discounts on in-park merchandise. Making the season pass even more accessible, an online payment plan option is now available, allowing for more affordable payments.

Prices for season passes are: 

Silver: $159 or $19.88 on a payment plan

Gold: $234 or $29.25 on a payment plan

Can I Bring My Dog to Dollywood? 

While non-service dogs aren’t permitted within Dollywood, there’s a dedicated area for your furry friends called Doggywood. It’s situated next to Guest Services at the Front Gate. Due to limited space, making reservations in advance for Doggywood is highly recommended. Reservations can be made online. Doggywood operates on the same days as Dollywood, accepting dogs starting 30 minutes before the park opens and requiring them to be claimed within 15 minutes after closing. Please note overnight boarding isn’t available at Doggywood.

Dollywood Parent Swap and Height Wristbands for Kids

When your group includes members who don’t meet the ride’s height requirements, Dollywood’s “Parent Swap” program ensures everyone can enjoy the attractions without hassle. Here’s how it works: The entire group enters the regular visitor line together, where a ride Host will assist with the “Parent Swap.” Strollers and loose articles aren’t allowed in this process. One adult stays with the child in a secure area—usually behind the loading or ride exit gate—directed by a Dollywood Host while the rest of the group enjoys the attraction. Once the group returns, the adults switch places. On certain rides, additional group members might even have a chance to ride again during the second part of the swap. After the “Parent Swap,” visitors exit the ride along with the other riders.
