What Are Alpine Coasters?

If you are far from an alpine coaster, you may not know what they are. Let’s get our education hats on for this subject!

Alpine coasters were once called mountain coasters. However, they officially came to the European scene in the mid-1990s.

An alpine coaster consists of a sled. Depending on the passenger size, The sled can hold one or two passengers. The sled is made to propel you in your individually-controlled sled. What does this mean?

This is a rollercoaster. You and your child or just you will embark on your rollercoaster car, but they call it a sled. Okay, cool, huh?

Well, the real kicker is that you will most fully operate this rollercoaster car known as the sled. If you are curious why I say primarily entirely used by you, that means there are lift hills at some point, and they take you up at their speed. Besides those lift hills, you are the operator of your speed.

How Many Alpine Coasters Are in Southern Tennessee?

There are 8 alpine coasters in the southern Tennessee area. They nestled in and around the Great Smoky area.

Safety Measures and Regulations

Alpine coasters offer a thrilling ride combining the excitement of a roller coaster with the personal control of a bobsled. These rides typically start with an uphill journey through scenic areas, often forests, on two stainless steel tubular rails. The carts, designed for one or two riders, disengage at the peak, and gravity takes over for the downhill experience.

The Downhill Experience

The downhill portion of the track of an alpine coaster is meticulously designed to enhance the thrill while prioritizing safety. It sometimes features crazy turns, banked corners, and rolling drops. These elements deliver excitement while ensuring the ride adheres to safety standards.

Braking System

One of the critical safety features of an alpine coaster is the individual braking system in each cart. This system empowers riders to control their speed. While the cart can accelerate to a maximum of about 25 mph, riders can slow down to a comfortable pace. This feature is particularly important as it allows riders to manage their speed based on their comfort level and riding experience.

Riding Configurations

The carts are designed for versatility, accommodating either a solo rider or a pair with a driver and passenger. This flexibility ensures everyone can enjoy the ride, from individual thrill-seekers to pairs wanting to share the experience.

The Following Distance

A crucial safety rule on alpine coasters is maintaining a safe following distance. Riders are instructed to stay at least 80 feet behind the cart in front of them. This distance is essential to prevent collisions, especially if the leading cart suddenly slows down. By adhering to this rule, riders can enjoy a safe and uninterrupted ride down the track.

General Safety Tips

In addition to the specific safety features of the coaster itself, there are general safety guidelines that riders should follow:

Always listen to and follow the instructions provided by the staff.

Ensure that all loose items (like hats, sunglasses, or phones) are securely stowed before starting the ride.

Riders should remain seated with their hands on the controls throughout the ride.

It’s advisable to start at a slower speed for first-time riders or those who are apprehensive.

By understanding and adhering to these safety measures, riders can enjoy a thrilling yet secure experience on alpine coasters, making the most of their adventure in the scenic backdrop of the mountains.

Age and Height Requirements

The minimum standard height to ride on an alpine coaster is 38 inches. However, if you want to depend on an alpine coaster alone, you must be anywhere from 54 inches to 56 inches. Since each alpine coaster has different height and age requirements, I’ve dived deep and researched all alpine coasters in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg for you.

Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster

Solo Riders: Individuals wishing to ride alone must be at least 56 inches tall. This height requirement ensures that the rider can comfortably and safely control the sled.

Riding with a Companion: If a rider is accompanied, the minimum height for the passenger is 38 inches. However, the person in control of the sled must meet two criteria: they must be at least 56 inches tall and not younger than 16. This ensures that the individual controlling the sled can manage its speed and navigate the course safely.

Maximum Height Limit: The rider’s height is also an upper limit. The maximum height allowed for any rider, solo or accompanied, is 84 inches (7 feet). This restriction is in place to accommodate the coaster’s design and ensure all riders’ safety.

Adhering to these height requirements is crucial for the safety of all riders on the alpine coaster. It’s always recommended to check these details before planning your visit to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride experience.

Is There a Weight Limit?

Yes, there is a weight limit. The weight limit for most of these alpine coasters will be around the 330-pound mark. This means neither guest’s weight can exceed 330 pounds.

Tips for First-Time Riders

If you’re gearing up for your first ride on a mountain or alpine coaster, understanding what to expect can enhance your experience:

Control Your Speed: Once you’re securely strapped into the coaster, solo or with a child, you can decide your riding speed. This control is typically managed through a hand lever that allows you to regulate the pace of your descent.

Options for Multiple Rides: Many amusement parks offer cheaper second-ride options. This is perfect for you to ride once during the day and come back and ride at night time. This option is only available on the day that you ride. You cannot use it the next day.

Mountain Coaster Wisp Mountain (McHenry, Maryland)

Starting for Beginners: If it’s your first time and you feel nervous, it’s advisable to start slow. Begin your descent by pulling on the hand lever, then gradually release it until you reach a comfortable speed. This approach allows you to navigate the coaster’s twists and turns confidently.

Track Features: Some alpine coaster tracks feature dynamic elements like long, winding drops and sharp uphills, adding an extra thrill to your ride.

Comfort and Safety: Alpine coasters are designed for rider comfort and safety. They feature smooth, comfortable seating and safety features to ensure a secure ride. This design focus allows you to sit back and fully enjoy the alpine coaster experience without concerns about a bumpy ride.

Comparison of Different Coasters

I was lucky to ride two of these alpine coasters during my trip to southern Tennessee. The first one I rode was the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster. I rode this one during the day and at night.

The Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster is the longest in southern Tennessee. You are on the ride between 7 to 9 minutes. There is one lift hill, and you are in control of your speed the rest of the way.

You should also note that even if this is your first time, they’ll give you instructions on operating your sled before you go out on the track.

Alpine Coaster

This track was nice. It was even more amazing during the time hours due to the lights on the track.

The other alpine coaster I rode was Ober Gatlinburg’s Ski Mountain Coaster. This was in Ober Gatlingburg park. This coaster was not like the other one for a few reasons. It felt like we went MUCH faster on this coaster than the last. Also, this coaster didn’t have guard rails on their turns, which made it A LOT scarier. Nevertheless, the coaster was still a good one to ride. Please remember that this coaster is smaller than the previous one we rode.
